The Day I out-ran the Israeli Defense Forces.

Kevin Hester

In 1981 I was backpacking through South East Asia when I found myself on Freak Street in Kathmandu, Nepal also known as Jhhonchen tole.

I was staying in a $1/night back packers with a group of Kiwi friends.
In those days the electricity supply in Kathmandu was very erratic and came and went without warning, many times every day. If you wanted to have a hot shower you had to que for your turn at the communal bathroom, when the power was on. No electricity, no hot shower. If the power went off you had to decide to wait in the que until it came back on or go away and que again later.

I was in the que when a group of young Israeli’s from the Israeli Defense Force walked up to the door and took control of access into the bathroom. We were arrogantly told we’d have to wait…

Anti-Zionism is Not Anti-Semitic: Reinstate Moshé Machover to the British Labour Party
Jews for Palestinian Right of Return
October 23, 2017

On October 3, eminent Israeli scholar Moshé Machover was summarily expelled from the British Labour Party for authoring an allegedly anti-Semitic article. In reality, however, Prof. Machover’s article discusses well-documented ideological parallels and active collaboration between Zionism and Nazism in the 1930s and ’40s, the current relevance of which is only confirmed by neo-Nazis like Richard Spencer, who calls himself a “white Zionist.”

Unable to dispute such facts, Zionists resort to smearing anti-Zionism — which is anti-racist, anti-apartheid, anti-colonialist, and anti-fascist — as anti-Semitic. Above all, this McCarthyite witch-hunt is designed to silence the surging Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, many of whose supporters are Jewish.

BDS, which resembles the divestment movement from apartheid South Africa and many other social justice movements, demands an end to Israeli…

Atoning for Gaza: A Sermon for Yom Kippur 5779

Shalom Rav

img_3380

One year ago, on the morning after Yom Kippur, I traveled to Palestine in my capacity as a staff person for the American Friends Service Committee. Among other things, my trip included several days with our staff in Gaza.

AFSC has a particularly significant connection to Gaza. In 1949, at the onset of the Palestinian refugee crisis, the organization was asked by the UN to organize relief efforts for refugees in the Gaza Strip. The AFSC agreed, believing their service to the new refugees would be temporary. But when it became clear Israel had no desire or intention to let Palestinian refugees return to their homes, the organization’s General Secretary Clarence Pickett, told the UN that they could not in good conscience enable the situation, insisting that there must be a political solution to the crisis. Shortly after, the UN created UNRWA (The United Nations Relief Works Agency), the…

McGill University Should Withdraw Its Honorary Doctorate To Hillel Neuer

Dimitri Lascaris

Following his recent appearance on the far-right Rebel Media, during which he vilified Justin Trudeau’s government for showing a modicum of compassion to Palestinian refugees, Hillel Neuer of UN Watch has launched a mendacious attack on me and Professor Michael Lynk.

Professor Lynk is the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT). He has meticulously documented Israel’s severe human rights abuses in the OPT, and has therefore drawn the ire of the relentlessly pro-Israel UN Watch.

Apparently, Neuer’s prodigious ego remains bruised after this past summer’s convocation at McGill University. For reasons that no one in the Palestinian solidarity movement can fathom, McGill University decided earlier this year to confer an honorary doctorate on this shameless apologist for Israeli apartheid. In protest, I and two other Palestinian solidarity activists, Yves Engler and Paul Tetrault, disrupted Neuer’s acceptance speech during…

BDS Triumph Over Sabra On Campus

University of Manchester

We are pleased to announce that the University of Manchester has confirmed its removal of Sabra hummus from their campus shop and the guarantee of not stocking Sabra products again, following pressure and campaigning from the Boycott, Divestment & Sanctions (BDS) campaign at University of Manchester. Sabra products on campus will be replaced with Delphi salad pots, an authentic brand of Greek and Mediterranean foods, a complete turn around from the cultural appropriation of Israeli hummus.

Sabra is a US-based company owned jointly by PepsiCo and Strauss Group. Strauss invests in and financially supports the Golani Brigade of the Israeli armed forces, who has carried out merciless human rights violations against Palestinians including arbitrary murders, assaults, incarcerations, evictions, and arrests of children, as well as the use of chemical weapons such as white phosphorus.

We are delighted to hear that the university will no longer be financially supporting human…
